Kodaikanal lake History

In the first place, Kodaikanal or Kodai Lake is a Man-Made💪 Lake. in the 1860s, Madurai Collector, Henry Levinge initiated the process of developing the Kodaikanal Lake which was created by diverting three streams flowing in one valley.

The Lake is almost 60 acres and 6KM. It is developed while the British Government is in the race of developing the Kodaikanal. Henry Levinge also brings the boats⛵ from Tuticorin and let people use the boats. Also, he formed the boathouse and boat club for members. These happened in the 1890s. Together with this, the Lake is Start Shaped ⭐ if you have a bird view.

Sir Henry Levinge settled himself in Pambar house after his retirement.

After a few decades, the Kodaikanal Lake becomes the best 🔥 tourist spot in Kodaikanal. It is the centre of Princess of the Hills, Kodaikanal. Flower shows, Horse Ride, Boating, refreshments and light meals are also available around the Kodai lake. The depth of the Kodai Lake is once 10 Meter, now it will be around 3M or less as local people and tourists made the Lake impure. You can find n number of small shops around there for shopping. Boating 🚣

There are three types of boating available, Boathouse, boat club and boat services. In view of boating cost for the tourists, it will vary from ₹100 to ₹1000 based on the type of boat, distance and timing. Luxury boats are also available you can choose that if you want.
